Project 1

Read the following article about the situationist practice of the dérive. Spend an amount of time (usually one day) aware of your surroundings as if you were viewing them for the first time. Create an abstract experiential animation that you think best approximates your experience of the perception of undirected drifting.

  1. No untransformed letters, words, numbers, recognizeable figures, or nameable shapes (eg. square, circle, triangle, duodecahedron, trapeziod) can be used.
  2. There should be motion at all times.
  3. At least four backgrounds should be used.
  4. At least 5 foreground items should be used.
  5. At least 3 shape tweens should be used.
  6. At least 5 motion tweens should be used.
  7. A written (1-2 pages) document summarizing the
    experience.

Prepare your summary as an HTML page, turn in with your animation on the
server.

P R O C E S S – Keep notes of your dérive. Carry a digital camera to document the passage of time. What shapes predominate your experience? Consider using them as a significant element in your
animation. Experience a “possible rendezvous”. From your notes, and on paper, create a complete storyboard or map of the work—as appropriate—before initiating work.

Project 1 Due: Feb 6, 12:00 noon
