Poetic Counterpart

Create a video counterpart to a poem where the meaning of the source work is revealed through a combination of signs (symbolic, iconic, and indexical).

Chosing one of the poems listed below, and using video imagery, create a non-literal visualization of the poem. Consider such evocative elements as metric structure, rhythm and imagery that the poet uses. Consider how the poet uses the line end in the written piece. Does the next word reinforce, echo, continue or subvert the text that came before? How will you reflect that in your work? Obtain a sound recording of the poet reading the work. What insight into the meaning does this give you?

Consider the concepts that the poet references, and the threads of text with which the poet works. Are there narrative threads that can be imaged? Invent designs where elements of text, sound, drawing and video work together to construct a complete thought. Can you express yourself through visuals, and without relying on the use of the poem’s original text?

Photograph or sketch objects that are mentioned in the poem. Consider the environment and context in which those objects are typically seen. Collect as much data, both visual and textual, that you possibly can. Recall and write about liminal past events that the poet evokes that particularly shaped your way of viewing the world. Remember that a successful work takes a risk, and reveals more than you may be comfortable discussing openly.

As part of the process of creating the video, we’ll be creating a poster that explores the literal meaning of the poem. Using imagery, type and the 50/5/5 rule, we’ll explore how to express the literal meaning of the poem.

Video pieces must be between 3 and 5 minutes in length. You may use video, sound, and still imagery. You may use type in this piece, but avoid a direct literalization of the poem text.

Specifics:
Pieces will be burned to a DVD or VCD in DVD-readable format (a video_ts and audio_ts file)
Pieces will be in created in DV NTSC standard format.
All images and video should be captured at the resolution 720 x 480.
Sound will be 2-channel stereo sound.
All discs must work on the instructors station during class time
